Rechargeable Batteries  

A eco friendly rechargeable battery is a group of one or more secondary cells. Rechargeable batteries use electrochemical reactions that are electrically reversible. They are also known as a storage battery. Rechargeable batteries come in many different sizes and use different combinations of chemicals. They offer economical and environmental benefits compared to disposable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are available in the same sizes as some disposable types like the AA, AAA. One advantage of green batteries is that they can be recharged and reused hundreds of times and the really good ones greatly outperform the everyday leading brand throwaway alkaline batteries. 

Eco friendly batteries are currently used for applications such as automobile starters, portable consumer devices, and light vehicles such as motorized wheelchairs, golf carts, electric bicycles, and electric forklifts, tools, and uninterruptible power supplies. They are also being put to use in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles thereby driving the technology for a green battery to improve cost, reduce weight, and increase lifetime. 

Green batteries come with very little to no charge. Once the battery is charged, they start to lose around 2% - 3% of their capacity a day, when not in use. Therefore after a month's time most Green batteries will need to be charged.

However there is now a new technology called low discharge rechargeable battery. This battery which also comes in all sizes will be delivered to you fully charged. As well it will only lose 15% of the capacity over an entire year.

Your green efforts should not end with just using rechargable batteries. Throwing eco friendly rechargeable batteries in with regular garbage is no better than dumping disposable alkaline batteries or any battery for that matter. Environmental friendliness has to account for the entire product life from mining to manufacturing, shipping, use and disposal.

One thing is for sure, for every rechargeable battery you use, 100 or more disposable alkaline batteries are not going to the landfill.

If a quality Eco Friendly battery lasts 200 or 300 cycles, you can further divide the cost examples we just talked about by 2 or 3. This also applies to the number of disposable batteries that can be eliminated from the pollution factor.
